This year’s offsite at the Zorath Spaceport was no exception. Notably, the event featured an interstellar food exchange tentatively called the “Galactic Potluck”. It’s a concept that, in theory, is meant to bring people together through the sharing of cuisine from different corners of our galaxy. However, what it often amounts to is a cacophony of alien dishes, with each one attempting to outshine the last. Inevitably, someone burned the casserole, and we found ourselves surrounded by an eerie silence. The smoke detector, unable to discern culinary mishap from interstellar disaster, responded with a symphony of beeping. In a moment of surprising solidarity, our Vector Navigation Specialist, Jaina Wind, approached me with a plate of what she called “Standard Space Grains”, and a look of trepidation in her eyes. She confessed that hers was the “burned casserole”, but instead of retreating to her quarters, she chose to reflect on the communal warmth of shared failure. It struck me then how easily we overlook the silence that comes from the quieting of excess noise. In the vacuum of success, the stark voices of failure can serve as a reminder that perhaps, in our quest for perfection, we lose sight of the quieter, more nuanced achievements. Our team's first principles thinking is a marvel, but it's equally enlightening to navigate the softer edges of our endeavors. And, yes, I must acknowledge the marketing team’s dominance in space trivia. They, with their relentless pursuit of the most obscure cultural knowledge points, managed to score the winning fact about Zorath’s lunar formation. It was a reminder of how diverse skills can sometimes be hidden beneath the noise of our daily rhythms. In the end, I found myself in a room filled with individuals, each carrying their own parts of the noise—not just voices but the echoes of their experiences. My shuttle pilot today did something truly unique. She asked me if I'd learned anything from the journey. Odd, right? Pilots rarely engage in conversation unless absolutely necessary. She mentioned how everyone on the shuttle was noise, and how she aimed to quiet it, to make the journey seamless, almost imperceptible. We strive to achieve significance, but sometimes it’s in making ourselves disappear that we make our greatest impact. As she handed me my disembarkation pass, she whispered, "Are you noise, or are you the quietness between the noise?" And it struck me that in leadership, perhaps it’s not about being the loudest or most visible, but about being the space that allows others to thrive and be heard.
