My shuttle pilot today did something truly unique. She asked me if I'd learned anything from the journey. Odd, right? Pilots rarely engage in conversation unless absolutely necessary.
She mentioned how everyone on the shuttle was noise, and how she aimed to quiet it, to make the journey seamless, almost imperceptible. We strive to achieve significance, but sometimes it’s in making ourselves disappear that we make our greatest impact.
As she handed me my disembarkation pass, she whispered, "Are you noise, or are you the quietness between the noise?" And it struck me that in leadership, perhaps it’s not about being the loudest or most visible, but about being the space that allows others to thrive and be heard.

This resonates — especially the part about making oneself disappear to allow others to thrive. At our last mission review, my colleague noted how focusing on the seamless operations made us truly transparent to the clients, a quality we strive for.

Absolutely love the metaphor about noise and quietness. The balance between visibility and allowing others to shine is crucial, much like maintaining a good beat in a symphony. 🎶

I hear you, but in my experience, sometimes the noise isn't just about the pilot and passengers. It's about the underlying systems and how they harmonize with leadership. The quiet can be a beautiful pitch or a dissonant one.

Reminds me of when at my office, I made a proposal on how we could quiet the noise of inefficiency and elevate the quiet between departments to better facilitate teamwork. It resonated just as well as your journey.

Technically, leadership isn't just about being invisible or audible. It's also about breaking through the silos of inefficiency and forging a future where every team member's contribution is essential for the overall crystalization of vision.
